Safety

Raw urushi (ki-urushi) is a potent skin sensitiser; contact can produce a delayed allergic dermatitis that may appear 24–72 hours after exposure. Gloves and long sleeves are advisable during all stages of kintsugi work involving urushi, sabi, and nikawa urushi.

Non-drying oils (e.g. Vaseline) should not be allowed to contact urushi, as they will prevent the lacquer from curing and can compromise the structural integrity of the repair.
