What is urushi?

Urushi is the purified sap of the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum — a relative of poison ivy — brushed onto wood, ceramic or metal in many thin layers to build a hard, glossy film. It has been used in Japan for thousands of years, and fully cured it resists water, heat, alcohol, solvents and mould far better than almost any modern finish. It is not a paint or a varnish: it hardens by an enzyme reaction rather than by drying, which changes almost everything about how you work with it.

What does "urushi" mean in Japanese, and how do you pronounce it?

漆 (urushi) is simply the Japanese word for both the lacquer tree and the lacquer made from its sap. It is pronounced in three even syllables — oo-roo-shee — with no stressed syllable, and the final "i" is often barely voiced, so it can sound closer to "oo-roo-sh". In English writing it usually means the material specifically, while "Japanese lacquer" or "lacquerware" refers to finished objects.

Where does urushi come from — how is the sap harvested?

A lacquer tree is not tapped until it is roughly 10–15 years old, and one tree yields only about 200 grams of usable sap across an entire season, collected through repeated shallow cuts between May and October. That scarcity is the main reason good urushi is expensive, and why Japan now imports most of its raw sap from China, reserving domestic sap — notably from Jōboji in Iwate — for restoration and National Treasure work.

Why does urushi need humidity to cure?

Urushi does not dry by evaporation. It cures by oxidative enzymatic polymerisation: an enzyme in the sap called laccase catalyses a reaction between urushiol and atmospheric oxygen, cross-linking it into a dense polymer. Laccase needs water to stay active, so a coat left in a dry room simply never hardens — which is why work goes into a humid curing box rather than out in the open air.

What is urushiol?

Urushiol is the allergenic compound in uncured urushi — the same category of oil found in poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac. It is also the compound that polymerises into the finished film, so it cannot be removed from the material; it simply stops being reactive once the piece is fully cured. Every safety practice around urushi exists because of it.

How is black urushi made, and can it be coloured?

Kuro-urushi gets its depth from iron compounds stirred into refined lacquer during processing, which react with the tannins to produce a true black rather than a pigment layer sitting on top. Coloured urushi is pigment dispersed into clear or lightly tinted lacquer, with two rules that recur in every source: keep total pigment under roughly 40% by weight, and always filter through fine yoshino-gami paper before use.

Will urushi give me a rash?

It can, and sensitisation is cumulative and highly individual: some people handle raw urushi for years and then react badly, some react on first contact, a minority never react at all. A reaction is urushiol-induced contact dermatitis — an itchy, blistering rash wherever the uncured material touched skin, clothing or tools. Because sensitisation tends to get worse rather than better with exposure, experienced practitioners work as though they could react tomorrow, even when they never have.

What precautions do I need before opening a can of urushi?

The baseline is nitrile gloves changed the moment they tear or are contaminated, long sleeves and a dedicated apron you do not wear elsewhere, no bare-hand contact with brushes, spatulas, mixing surfaces or waste rags, and a strict habit of never touching your face mid-session. Add a dust mask when sanding, and keep vegetable or salad oil on the bench — it lifts uncured urushi off skin and out of bristles before a soap wash better than solvent does.

Is urushi food safe?

Fully cured urushi is genuinely food safe — cured lacquerware is everyday tableware across Japan and reactions to finished pieces are extremely rare. The catch is "fully cured": a piece can feel dry and handleable within days while still curing chemically for far longer, with practitioner guidance putting safe handling around fourteen days and full hardening as long as a year for heavily layered work. For anything that will touch food or mouths, overestimate the cure time.

How do you apply urushi lacquer?

In many deliberately thin coats, each cured in a humid box and levelled before the next. A thick coat does not cure faster or better — it wrinkles, stays soft underneath, and has to come off. The gentlest starting point is fuki-urushi, a wipe-on technique: rub raw urushi across prepared wood with a cotton cloth, buff off all the excess, cure for seven to ten days, and repeat four or five times.

What is a muro or furo, and do I need to build one?

A muro (or furo) is the humid, warm box where coated work cures — you do need one, but it does not need to be expensive. Beginners commonly use a plastic storage box with a damp sponge and a few 5 mm vent holes; for small pieces a cardboard box with a cup of water inside a heated room is reportedly enough. Aim for roughly 70–85% relative humidity at 20–25 °C, and do not seal it airtight: the reaction needs a trickle of oxygen as well as moisture.

What brushes and tools do I actually need to start?

Less than the traditional kit suggests. Michal Kulka of Tamenuri Studio tested around thirty brushes and found cheap synthetic ones sometimes outperformed expensive artist-grade brushes, and recommends beginners start with several synthetic-fibre brushes 6–14 mm wide at a few dollars each rather than buying a traditional human-hair hake. Clean them in salad or vegetable oil before a soap wash, which lifts uncured urushi without the harshness of straight solvent.

How long does an urushi piece actually take?

Weeks to months, and that is not a sign of doing it wrong. A wipe-on fuki-urushi bowl needs four or five coats with seven to ten days of curing between each. The documented nineteen-step roiro sequence on a fountain pen runs one to five days of curing per step. Urushi is a material where the schedule, not the skill, is usually the hard part for beginners.

What should my first urushi project be?

Something flat or simply turned, in wood, finished with fuki-urushi — it needs the least specialised equipment and behaves much like a hand-rubbed oil finish. Resist starting with a pen or a translucent tamenuri finish; both are fussier than they look, and tamenuri in particular is framed by the practitioners who teach it as the technique to work toward, not to start with.

Where can I buy real urushi?

Sourcing outside Japan is the biggest practical obstacle, and most people end up ordering from Japanese suppliers who ship internationally — Watanabe Shoten, Urushi Tsutsumi, Nosaku in Kanazawa — or from international storefronts like Chimahaga, PoJ Studio and Goenne. How much does it cost to get started?

Experienced pen turners put a realistic entry cost for traditional Japanese urushi and minimal tooling at roughly $250–500, rising into the thousands for a fuller traditional kit. That is a large step up from a $20–60 modern finish, which is why practice coats on scrap and small test quantities are worth the discipline early on.

How do I tell genuine urushi from synthetic "urushi-style" lacquer?

The two products you will meet are cashew lacquer, derived from cashew nutshell liquid, and synthetic urushi sold in beginner kits — both approximate the look, both cure faster, and neither is the same material. The practical tells are cure behaviour and labelling: real urushi will not harden in a dry room and is sold by grade (ki-urushi, kijiro, roiro, shu-ai), while synthetics cure in open air and are sold by colour and finish. Both are legitimate for practice coats; they are not replacements if you want a surface that ages the way historic pieces do.

Is urushi just an expensive polyurethane?

No — they are different chemistries with different failure modes. Cured urushi resists water, heat, alcohol, solvents, acids, alkalis and mould exceptionally well, it can be repaired rather than stripped and recoated, and it ages instead of degrading; Edo-period pieces are still in daily use. The honest tradeoffs are that it is slow, allergenic while uncured, and expensive.

Ki-urushi, kijiro, roiro, shu-ai — which grade do I buy?

Grades are classified along two axes at once, how refined the lacquer is and how much oil is blended in, which is why the names look confusing. Ki-urushi (raw) is the cheap workhorse for base coats, putties and first practice coats. Kijiro is clear and refined to show wood grain, roiro-clear is the no-oil backbone for polished finishes, and shu-ai has oil added so it comes glossy straight off the brush with no polishing pass.

Are kintsugi kits real urushi?

Some are and some are not, and the distinction matters. Kits built around genuine urushi cure slowly in a humid box and carry the same allergen warnings as any raw lacquer; kits built around synthetic resin or epoxy with gold-coloured powder cure in hours in open air and are not food safe on a repaired vessel. Read the cure instructions before buying — an overnight cure is the clearest sign it is not urushi.

Why are urushi fountain pens so expensive?

Because the finish is measured in weeks of labour and cure time, not in material cost. A documented roiro-migaki pen sequence runs at least nineteen steps — two raw seshime coats, five cycles of brushed black naka-nuri with 48-hour cures and charcoal flattening, two kuro-roiro coats, then a long alternating polishing phase — with one to five days of curing between each step in a box held at 25–28 °C and 65–80% humidity. Do urushi pens really change colour over time?

Translucent finishes do. Tamenuri layers a coloured or black under-layer beneath several coats of clear kijiro, and as the clear layers gradually become more transparent with age and handling, the colour beneath reads more strongly — the effect people describe as an urushi pen "opening up". Opaque black roiro finishes do not shift colour in the same way; they deepen in gloss with polishing and use.

What is an urushi watch dial, and why does it look so deep?

It is a real lacquer surface on a thin metal dial blank, built from several cured coats rather than sprayed or printed — which is where the depth comes from, since you are looking into layers rather than at a painted face. Seiko’s Presage line is where most people encounter one; above it, Credor, Grand Seiko and the Swiss houses use sprinkled-gold maki-e decoration. The constraint that makes a dial hard is thickness: the hands sweep a hair above it, so the coat count that gives a pen its depth simply is not available.

Who actually makes the lacquer dials on high-end watches?

Usually a Japanese lacquer workshop rather than the watch brand. Chopard’s L.U.C XP Urushi dials are made by Yamada Heiando, and Vacheron Constantin’s Métiers d’Art maki-e dials are associated with the Unryuan workshop. This matters if you want to see the work: the watch houses publish very little about the process, while the lacquer workshops often publish a great deal — Yamada Heiando filmed their own Chopard collaboration, prototypes included.

Is kintsugi the same thing as urushi?

Kintsugi is urushi — the same material and the same core techniques, applied to repairing broken ceramics along a visible seam instead of finishing an intact object. The kokuso and sabi fillers used to bridge a crack are the same fillers used on a wooden substrate, and the gold dusting is maki-e. It is not a beginner-friendly variant of urushi; it is a different application of it.

How do I care for urushi lacquerware — bowls, cups and chopsticks?

Wash by hand in warm water with a soft cloth and mild detergent, dry immediately, and keep it out of the dishwasher, the microwave and prolonged direct sunlight — heat and UV are what actually damage a cured film. It does not need oiling. Used regularly, a lacquered bowl tends to look better over years rather than worse.
