- Bare wood smoothed with a whetstone.
- Lacquer mixed with polishing powder applied over the whole surface.
- Left to dry, then smoothed again.
- Repeat: raw lacquer applied, magnolia charcoal polish, repeated smear-and-polish cycles until the surface texture fully flattens.
- Kijiro lacquer applied as a distinct bottom, middle, and top coat sequence, each dried and smoothed in turn.

Traditional tansu ironwork is its own craft, worth knowing about if you're building anything with hardware: designs are pasted onto iron or copper plate, hand-engraved by hammering chisels from the reverse side (repoussé), embossed, then the fittings are cut, filed, finished — Sendai tansu craftspeople work from a kit of roughly 1,300 specialized chisels and hammers for this. Scaling up: curing and layer count
Contemporary designers working in urushi at furniture scale confirm the same environmental targets used throughout this guide translate directly — 75–80% RH, ~24°C — but note the achievable layer count in a professional/design context runs to 15–16 coats for a piece like Aldo Bakker's "Urushi Series" furniture, applying fuki-urushi in roughly 15 repeated cycles to build a deep black, grain-revealing gloss.
