Safety

Raw urushi (ki-urushi) and all urushi-based mixtures including mugi-urushi, sabi-urushi, and nakanuri are potent skin sensitisers. Contact can trigger a delayed urushiol-type dermatitis, sometimes 24–72 hours after exposure. Wear nitrile or neoprene gloves and avoid any skin contact with mixed lacquer, especially during the mugi-urushi assembly step where the adhesive is handled directly.
