Safety

Raw lacquer (ki-urushi) is a potent skin sensitiser. Contact can produce a delayed urushiol-type dermatitis that may appear 24–72 hours after exposure and can be severe. When mixing nikawa-urushi, applying it to the piece, and scraping squeeze-out, wear nitrile or latex gloves and avoid any skin contact. The hide glue itself is not a sensitiser, but the lacquer component is.

Hydrate and heat the hide glue

Mix nikawa-urushi

Combine one part prepared hide glue with four parts raw lacquer (ki-urushi). The resulting mixture is very thick, extremely sticky, and stringy enough to be stretched a considerable distance without breaking.

Apply and join the broken parts

Spread the nikawa-urushi onto the fracture surfaces in the same manner as mugi-urushi, press the pieces together, and hold them in alignment. For a Yixing teapot the waxy, non-porous surface often makes masking tape unnecessary, and any stray lacquer can be scraped off like paint on a glazed surface.
