Safety

Raw urushi (ki-urushi) is a potent skin sensitiser; the reaction is delayed by hours to days and can be severe. The multi-layer procedure described here involves repeated, prolonged hand contact with wet urushi over many days. Nitrile or latex gloves are essential, and any contact with skin should be washed off immediately with a degreasing solvent or soap and water before the allergen binds.

Build up the rubbed-in layers

Apply twenty to thirty rubbed-in coats of urushi, lightly sanding between the early coats. Allow one to two days of cure between each layer.

First polish

Mix a white-grade lacquer polishing compound (e.g. Sanwa Douzuriko White) with a small amount of vegetable oil and buff gently with a flannel cloth. Work lightly to avoid polishing through on corners.

Second coat build

Wash the surface thoroughly with soap and water, then apply two to three additional rubbed-in coats of urushi.

Final polish

Mix a colour-grade polishing compound (e.g. Sanwa Roino Migakiko Colour Cream) with oil and work it in with the heel of the hand for the final gloss.
