Judging readiness for gold powder in kintsugi and choosing between keshifun and marufun

Safety

Raw urushi (ki-urushi) is a potent skin sensitiser; the reaction is delayed by 24–72 hours and can be severe. Working with bengara-urushi and handling partially cured surfaces during gold-powder application involves direct skin contact with urushi. Wear nitrile or neoprene gloves and avoid any skin contact with the wet or tacky material.

Readiness for gold powder can be judged by the blue-breath test (blowing on the surface and looking for a momentary iridescent sheen) or, more reliably, by drawing test lines on a scrap piece cured alongside the work and poking them with a toothpick at ten-to-fifteen-minute intervals until the surface is gelled and sticky but no longer levels out. The superfine keshifun powder used in kits cannot be polished but can be burnished with an agate stone; sealing over it is not recommended because an ill-judged seal will discolor the gold. For a harder, polishable finish, marufun is the appropriate powder. The gold itself is inert and non-toxic, so the repair is food-safe, though the keshifun layer will gradually wear with heavy use and can be reapplied.

Test readiness with a scrap piece and toothpick

Draw a few lines of the same bengara-urushi on a scrap piece and cure it alongside the work. At ten-to-fifteen-minute intervals, poke a line with a toothpick. If the urushi sticks to the toothpick and the indentation levels out and disappears, it is not cured enough. If the surface has a resilient, non-sticky skin, it is too far cured. The correct moment is when the urushi is gelled, still sticky, and the indentation does not level out after the toothpick is withdrawn.

Use the blue-breath test as a secondary check

Blow on the surface as if fogging a lens. If a bluish or iridescent sheen appears and vanishes almost instantly, the surface is ready for powder. If the condensation reads as a flat white haze, the urushi is too far cured. If no haze forms at all, it is not yet ready. This method is difficult to read and the window is very short, so the toothpick test on scrap is generally more reliable.
