Finishing fuki-urushi chopsticks and spoons: sanding, additional coats, and polishing sequence

Safety

Raw urushi (ki-urushi) is a potent skin sensitiser. Contact can produce a delayed urushiol rash that may appear 24–72 hours after exposure and can be severe. Nitrile gloves are the minimum barrier; one commenter in the thread wears them while rubbing lacquer on by hand. Avoid bare-hand contact with wet or semi-cured lacquer, and wash any splashed area immediately with a degreasing soap or alcohol before the resin sets on the skin.
