Safety

Raw urushi contains urushiol, the same allergen responsible for poison-ivy dermatitis. The reaction is delayed (hours to days), so the absence of an immediate sensation is not a sign of safety. Avoid all skin contact with uncured lacquer; use nitrile or rubber gloves, long sleeves, and work in a clean area.

If urushi contacts skin, do not rub or spread it. Lift the residue off with a cotton swab or tissue dampened with vegetable oil, then wash the area thoroughly with ethanol or isopropanol, followed by soap and water. A reaction may still develop even after thorough cleaning.

Even a person who has never reacted can develop sensitivity later in life, and urushiol residue on the hands of a non-reactive worker can transfer to and affect others. Clean hands after every session regardless of personal sensitivity.

When sanding cured urushi, wear a dust mask or wet-sand to avoid inhaling fine particulate.

Prepare the wood surface
