What goes wrongShell fragments lift or fall off when the surface is touched after application. This is recognised immediately on inspection and indicates the adhesive layer was not fully cured or was applied too thinly to hold the fragments in place.
What recovers itRe-apply the fragments using a properly thickened adhesive layer (moderately thick urushi for sprinkled work, a thin but deliberate coat for individually placed work), allow a slow and thorough cure of at least three to four days before any handling, then build up several thin protective coats of urushi over the fragments, cure each coat, and only then sand the surface level and polish.
